University Of Port Harcourt Alumni Association, Abuja Chapter Visits IDP Camp In Durumi Abuja

…..Donates food, clothes and sanitary materials

The University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association, Abuja Chapter on Sunday November 12th, 2017 fulfilled its corporate social responsibility role by paying a visit to the Gwoza / Bama Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Durumi, FCT, Abuja. The visit was to serve as a needs assessment and presentation of food items, used clothes and sanitary materials to our fellow citizens who have found themselves in a situation they did not bargain for.

We gathered at the Cockerel Fast Food Restaurant in Area 1 Zoological Garden Garki, which is our monthly meeting venue and served as our take off point for this IDP camp visit. With a decent crowd of about twenty five members of the Abuja Chapter, we proceeded at about 4pm to the camp and were received by the Camp Coordinator Mr. Aliu Ibrahim.

Mr. Ibrahim said the number one need of the inhabitants of the IDP camp is food; there is never enough food for them.
Next is Medicare; with a population of approximately 2,000 people, the women and children are the most vulnerable and need a lot of help in terms of basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. The make shift accommodation exposes these vulnerable people to the elements as well as human danger, we were made to understand that an 8 year old child was raped in this camp just a few days ago! Education of the children in the camp is also a major concern of the camp coordinator as he said they are unable to afford payment of qualified teachers who come to teach the children.

The President, Austin Okeze, the Executive Committee and members of the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association after listening and seeing for themselves the deplorable conditions of the Camp and its inhabitants promised to follow up on the visit by addressing the needs of the camp through appeals to more members of its Branch and the general public to support this very noble cause of lending a helping hand to our brothers in need.

We thank all those who made this visit and presentation possible, especially those who are not members of our Association but still supported us with finance and advice that helped in no small measure to make this visit a success. We will not leave out all our committed Abuja Branch members who contributed their time and money so unselfishly to make this visit happen. Thank you very much our University of Port Harcourt Abuja Branch members for your commitment and dedication.

The President and Executive Committee members of the Abuja Chapter do hereby appeal to all “Unique” Alumni members in Abuja and environs to identify with the Chapter and follow our activities and programs as we make them known on social, print and electronic media. We are on Facebook @… and
