A 20-year-old man, Aondoaseer Agbadu, has been remanded at the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre after his arraignment at the Magistrate Court in Makurdi, Benue State. He is facing charges related to conspiracy and organ harvesting.
The case came to light when Alexander Swati, a resident living near the Benue Internal Revenue Service office in Aliade, reported a grievous case to the police on August 27. The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Ato, the alleged events unfolded in April 2023 when Agbadu, along with unidentified accomplices, deceived and transported Swati’s 17-year-old son to Abuja. While in Abuja, they allegedly performed a surgical operation on the young man, harvesting one of his kidneys without his or his father’s consent and subsequently selling it to another individual.
Agbadu is facing charges under Sections 27 and 20 (1) (2) and (3) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015.
The Magistrate presiding over the case has adjourned proceedings until October 23, 2023, to allow for further investigation and legal processes to unfold.
