The Presidency has clarified the rationale behind the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s decision to adopt President Bola Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
According to Daniel Bwala, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, the APC leadership arrived at the decision after conducting a midterm performance review, which affirmed the president’s achievements and leadership direction.
Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday night, Bwala described the move as “a tapestry of organization,” emphasizing that the APC remains a progressive party committed to performance evaluation and internal accountability.
Earlier on Thursday, both the APC National Assembly Caucus and the party’s Governors’ Forum had formally endorsed Tinubu for re-election, citing the president’s “good works” and developmental strides.
At the APC National Summit held in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio publicly confirmed that the party had adopted Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the upcoming general election.
Bwala explained that the endorsement was the outcome of extensive internal assessments:
“This midterm review is a performance check on the president himself. Submitting to such scrutiny reflects how development-driven the president is.”
He added that before the summit, party stakeholders had been tasked with reviewing the administration’s promises and performance to determine whether President Tinubu merited a second term.
“It’s perfectly normal for a political party to chart its direction internally. This was an in-house appraisal, not a public referendum.”
Highlighting Tinubu’s early economic interventions, Bwala pointed out improvements in state finances and debt servicing as indicators of effective leadership:
“When the president assumed office, Nigeria’s economic situation was dire. Today, many states can pay salaries, execute projects, and meet minimum wage commitments—all due to increased federal revenue under Tinubu’s leadership.”
He also clarified that the party’s internal endorsement does not suggest the administration has achieved all its goals. Rather, it was a vote of confidence based on progress made so far.
“We’re not saying everything is perfect. But given our manifesto goals—from student funding and infrastructure to security—and what has been achieved in two years, the APC believes the president deserves another term.”
