Prosperity Cup Women’s Tourney: Flying Stars, Bayelsa Stars Queens Squeeze Through, As NDU Queens Begin Title Defence

Bayelsa Stars Queens of Yenagoa and Flying Stars Queens have booked their places in the next round of the women’s version of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football spectacle, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament tagged the Prosperity Cup.

In the encounters decided at the Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, BDGS centre on Monday, Bayelsa Stars Queens pipped God’s Mercy City FC one nil, while Flying Stars Queens beat Orukaribai Queens 6-5 on penalties after a barren draw in regulation time to secure their places in the next round of the tournament.

Striker Ogiligi Annette’s lone goal on 52 minutes was all that separated Bayelsa Stars Queens from God’s Mercy City FC.

Despite being sandwiched in between two opponents, Annette meandered her way through to place a valuable cross for Tatua Princes which beat all the defenders, before falling again for a well positioned Ogiligi Annette, who simply controlled and tapped the ball in to bury the game.

Victorious coach of Flying Stars Queens, Joel commended the girls for their show of dexterity and determination throughout the game, pointing out that they are approaching every game as a cup final, describing the women’s version of the tournament as laudable.

He appreciated governor Douye Diri and the organizers of the tournament for introducing the women’s version of the competition as well as giving the youths in the state the platform to showcase their talents.

On her part, coach of Orukaribai Queens, Ezougha Beauty said her side gave their best despite the defeat, stating that the girls would bounce back in the next season of the tournament.

Action continues on Tuesday at the BDGS field with defending champions, Niger Delta University, NDU Queens
beginning their title defence with what is expected to be a mouth watering clash against high-scoring Ezougha FC, who put eight goals past their opponents in the preliminary round.

Stardom Life Sports Academy faces Seaside Academy in the other match of the day at 4.30p.m. at the same venue.
