Retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal Dies Mid-Air on London–Abuja Flight, Plane Diverted to Spain

A retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State has reportedly died mid-flight while travelling from London to Abuja aboard a British Airways (BA) flight.

According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, forcing the pilot to declare a medical emergency and divert the aircraft to El Prat Airport in Barcelona, Spain.

The flight, which departed Heathrow Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was expected to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, around 5:00 a.m. Monday. However, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the emergency situation prompted an unscheduled landing in Spain.

As of the time of this report, Daily Post could not independently confirm the identity of the deceased or obtain an official statement from authorities.

In a message to affected passengers, British Airways apologized for the disruption and assured travellers of full support and updates regarding the situation.

“Passengers are advised to expect an email with more information and can reach out to our Live Chat feature for assistance. British Airways acknowledges the inconvenience and appreciates passengers’ patience and understanding,” the airline said.

The incident caused brief delays for onward travel arrangements as authorities in Spain handled the emergency.
