ADC, Rhodes-Vivour Petition Police Over Alleged Election Threat by Lagos NURTW Chairman

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, have jointly petitioned the Lagos State Police Command over alleged threats of violence made by the Lagos Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego.

The petition, filed by Inibehe Effiong Chambers and submitted on Thursday, follows a viral video in which Adekunle was reportedly heard warning transport workers to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections or face dire consequences.

In the video said to have been recorded on September 25, 2025, Adekunle allegedly declared that “what happened in 2023 will not be allowed to repeat itself in 2027,” a statement that many interpreted as a direct threat of violence against opposition supporters.

According to the petition, Adekunle’s remarks, though made mostly in Yoruba, were “clear and chilling,” conveying a deliberate attempt to intimidate political opponents and instill fear ahead of the next election.

Following public outrage, Adekunle was reportedly invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning over the incident.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rhodes-Vivour said the petition was filed to create an official record, stressing that any future acts of intimidation or violence would not go unchallenged.

“Earlier today, the ADC submitted our petition to the police against Mustapha Adekunle of the NURTW. We did this for the record, so that it will not be said that we failed to seek a lawful response to their aggression and intimidation,” he wrote.

He accused the APC-led Lagos government of using threats and coercion instead of focusing on development and good governance.

“For over 24 years, the president and his Lagos APC allies have controlled this state, yet their record of governance remains dismal. Instead of delivering progress, they rely on violence and intimidation to silence opposition. But Nigerians are not cowards — we will resist this thugocracy,” Rhodes-Vivour stated.
