BREAKING: Amupitan Assumes Office as New INEC Chairman

The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, officially assumed duty at the Commission’s headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Amupitan arrived at the INEC headquarters at exactly 2:27 p.m. in a white coaster bus, accompanied by National Commissioners and a motorcade following his swearing-in earlier in the day by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He was ushered into the Commission’s Conference Hall at 2:57 p.m., dressed in a white babariga paired with a Yoruba traditional cap, where he was formally introduced to the Directors of the Commission.

The new INEC boss was accompanied by his wife, a Professor, alongside top officials from the University of Jos, including the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrar, Bursar, and Librarian.

Amupitan, who was confirmed by the Senate after receiving the endorsement of the National Council of State, pledged to strengthen electoral processes and tackle logistics challenges in future elections.

He replaces Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended recently after overseeing two general elections.
