Wike’s PDP Faction Shifts Ekiti Governorship Primary Over Logistics Concerns

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened as the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the postponement of the Ekiti State governorship primary election earlier scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to a letter jointly signed by the faction’s Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, the postponement was due to logistical challenges that made it impossible to conduct the exercise as planned.

The letter, which was addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, stated that a new date for the primary will be communicated to the Commission once it is decided.

The statement read in part:

“We wish to inform you that the PDP Ekiti State Congress and Governorship primary slated for November 8, 2025, has been postponed due to logistical reasons constraining this exercise.

A new date will be formally communicated when decided.

Please accept the assurances of our esteemed regards. Kindly refer to our earlier letter to the Commission on this subject matter.”

The decision has further exposed the widening cracks within the PDP’s national leadership, which has been divided between two major camps — one loyal to Wike and the other aligned with Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Political observers say the postponement may deepen the uncertainty surrounding the PDP’s preparations for the 2026 Ekiti governorship election, as both factions continue to battle for control of the party’s structures nationwide.

Wike’s loyalists have maintained that their faction remains the “authentic” leadership of the PDP, while the Damagum-led group insists it is the legally recognized national executive. The power tussle has continued to create confusion across several state chapters, with the Ekiti situation being the latest casualty.

The postponement also comes amid concerns about dwindling public confidence in the PDP’s internal democracy, as the party struggles to reconcile its warring factions ahead of crucial elections.
