A FORMER Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has expressed concerns over the fate that has befallen some prominent individuals involved in unravelling criminal allegations against suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.
The rights activist, in a tweet on his Twitter handle on Sunday, said Joseph Egbunike, a deputy inspector-general of police, who probed Kyari’s alleged deal with self-confessed internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas (Hushpuppi) died a few days ago.
According to Odinkalu, the Chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, who is also handling another case against Kyari is reportedly planning to undergo major surgery.
He said: “In the Fortnight after #AbbaKyari is arraigned, 1st the DIG of @PoliceNG who led inquiry into charges against him dies suddenly & then the chairman of @ndlea_nigeria who is prosecuting him goes into hospital for major surgery. Pls oh, it is coincidence. U ppl shd not come & be….”
PlatinumPost reports that while Egbunike, a deputy inspector-general of police in charge of the force’s criminal investigations department, died on Tuesday, it is yet to be ascertained if the NDLEA chairman is scheduled for any surgery.
Prior to his death, Egbunike was the chairman of the panel instituted by the IGP to investigate the FBI allegations against Kyari even as the suspended police officer is at present remanded in NDLEA’s custody following an alleged involvement in a cocaine deal.
