President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with two governors from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), namely Pastor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State and Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
In his remarks to reporters after the meeting, Governor Eno stressed the significance of setting aside political differences and prioritizing governance now that the elections are concluded. He expressed his unwavering commitment to collaborating with the federal government to ensure that the people of Akwa Ibom reap the benefits of democracy.
Eno affirmed, “We came here to meet with the President, congratulate him on his election victory and swearing-in, and pledge our unwavering support, commitment, and loyalty to the President and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The time for politics is behind us; it is now time for governance. Akwa Ibom is an integral part of Nigeria, and we must work hand in hand with the federal government to ensure that the people of Akwa Ibom experience the dividends of democracy.”
During the meeting, the governor discussed several areas where federal intervention is vital, including the completion of the Calabar-Itu road, the development of the Ibom deep seaport, obtaining an export license, and establishing a free trade zone for Calabar airport. Eno emphasized the significance of forging strategic partnerships with the federal government to bolster the state’s aviation industry and facilitate the importation of spare parts for aircraft maintenance.
Eno also highlighted the initiatives implemented by his administration to mitigate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidies on the populace. He disclosed that palliatives had been distributed to local governments and expressed his intention to engage with petroleum marketers in the state to seek their cooperation in alleviating the hardships arising from the subsidy removal.
“We are exploring avenues to support our people and shield them from the effects of subsidy removal. In the coming week, you will witness various measures we will implement,” Eno added.
The governor expressed optimism that President Tinubu would give due consideration to their requests and work tirelessly towards the development and progress of Akwa Ibom state, ensuring that the aspirations of the people are fulfilled.
