Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has initiated discussions concerning the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to give this matter careful consideration and extend a hand of fellowship to the people of the South-East.
After a private meeting with the President on Thursday, Mbah informed State House correspondents that they discussed various issues, including the possible release of the secessionist agitator, who has received several favorable court judgments regarding his prosecution.
The governor emphasized that Kanu’s release would contribute to the national healing process, which has already been initiated by the President. He expressed hope that the President would give the request a favorable consideration.
Mbah also revealed that he appealed to the Federal Government for assistance in harnessing the abundant mineral resources in Enugu State for the benefit of its people.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, the governor stated, “We have significant assets in Enugu that, with a partnership between the state and the Federal Government, can be transformed into productive assets. Many people are unaware that we have substantial mineral resources in our region. These resources remain untapped beneath the ground. Therefore, we believe that through the partnership we are seeking with the Federal Government, we can convert these assets into productive resources.”
He further explained that the state aims to drive economic growth through private sector participation, which requires a conducive business environment characterized by security and infrastructure. Mbah highlighted the importance of discussing these matters with the President.
In addition, the governor announced the ban of the “sit-at-home” order on Mondays in Enugu, emphasizing the need to enhance security and address the challenges associated with this decision.
Governor Mbah’s visit aimed to address various issues of importance to Enugu State and foster collaboration with the Federal Government in order to promote development and progress.
