Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South District in Borno State has made it clear that he should not be held accountable if the newly elected Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, fails to meet expectations in his new role.
Senator Ndume played a key role in the campaign for Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Barau Jibril, which resulted in their election on Tuesday.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Senator Ndume was asked if Akpabio’s performance would reflect on him as one of his endorsers. He disagreed with this notion, stating, “I don’t think that is right. I’m not Akpabio. Even before God, Akpabio will account for his own; I will account for mine.”
Senator Ndume firmly believed that he should not share any responsibility for Akpabio’s performance. He acknowledged that he had endorsed Akpabio as the best candidate but emphasized that he cannot predict what Akpabio’s actions and decisions will be in the future.
“I said he’s the best,” admitted Senator Ndume, who also serves as the Majority Leader of the ninth Senate. “If he turns out to be the worst, I’m not going to be held responsible. How can you hold me accountable? I didn’t force anybody to vote. I believe he’s the best, but I don’t know what he will do tomorrow. I can’t say that.”
Senator Ndume based his expectations on what he has observed from Akpabio over the past four years. He highlighted Akpabio’s intelligence, passion for certain issues, and his ability to transcend tribal affiliations. With Akpabio’s qualifications and experience as a lawyer, former minister, and commissioner, Senator Ndume expressed confidence that Akpabio has the necessary qualities to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
As the new Senate President assumes his role, Senator Ndume has made it clear that he should not be held liable for any shortcomings that may arise.
