Baffa Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government of Kano State, has provided clarification regarding the demolition of a popular roundabout that was constructed during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The roundabout, which has been the target of demolition by Abba Yusuf, a political ally of Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ganduje’s predecessor and political rival, has generated significant controversy since May 29th.
During an appearance on the radio program ‘Barka da Hantsi’ on Freedom Radio, Bichi highlighted two main concerns associated with the roundabout. One of these concerns was the obstruction it caused at the entrance to the government house gate, resulting in traffic congestion and restricted access to the government premises.
Bichi also mentioned the presence of a cross sign on the roundabout, which raised religious sensitivities. Given that Kano State has an overwhelmingly Muslim population, the display of a cross sign in front of the Government House was considered inappropriate.
The demolition of the roundabout has sparked discussions among residents, with differing opinions on the matter. Some individuals argue for the preservation of the roundabout as part of the city’s heritage, while others support the government’s decision to address both practical and religious concerns.
As a replacement, the government plans to construct a simpler traffic intersection in the area where the roundabout previously stood.
