In a memo dated June 1, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the renaming of several federal airports as part of the aviation sector reforms. The Maiduguri Airport now honors former President Muhammadu Buhari, Port Harcourt Airport pays tribute to Obafemi Awolowo, and Nasarawa Airport immortalizes Usman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Additionally, the Benin Airport bears the name of the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II, Ebonyi Airport is now associated with the late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, and Ibadan Airport is dedicated to the late Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.
