Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actor, Charly Boy, has stirred up controversy by encouraging Nigerian youths to rise up and revolt against the country. The 73-year-old artist, known for his support of presidential candidate Peter Obi, drew inspiration from the recent unrest in France following the tragic killing of a 17-year-old boy by a policeman.
Charly Boy posted a video on social media depicting the fiery chaos in parts of Paris, drawing a parallel between the situation in France and Nigeria. He called on Nigerian youths to take a similar stand against a system they believe has failed them, suggesting that it is time for the exceptional Nigerian youth to regain control over their destiny.
However, his call for action received mixed reactions. Many commenters expressed resentment towards Charly Boy, criticizing him for advocating violence and hatred instead of positively impacting the country. Some challenged the artist to let his own children lead the movement, emphasizing that the responsibility for change lies with the current generation of Nigerian youths.
Others urged Charly Boy not to incite violence and emphasized the importance of pursuing peaceful approaches to resolving issues. Even the Director of Media and Publicity for the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign denounced Charly Boy’s statements as “highly irresponsible” and called for authorities to intervene.
Charly Boy’s remarks have sparked a heated debate on the role of activism and the appropriate methods for bringing about change in Nigeria.
