Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Yari was detained by the DSS over allegations of receiving N45 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the reelection of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. The detained governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, implicated Yari in the alleged corruption scheme.
According to sources, Yari was tracked by DSS agents following his return from London for medical care. The DSS investigation was reportedly prompted by the testimonies of both Emefiele and the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa. Yari was accused of engaging in deals with Emefiele, while Bawa was accused of working for Yari.
It was previously reported that Yari had lobbied opposition party leaders and spent large sums of money on his political aspirations. Details also emerged about how Yari, together with the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, allegedly misappropriated funds from oil-rich states.
Yari’s release from custody comes after a period of detention and investigations into the corruption allegations.
