A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order for the disclosure of the spending details of approximately $5 billion recovered from the Abacha loot by the Nigerian governments of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari.
The court specifically directed the government of President Bola Tinubu to reveal the exact amount of money stolen by General Sani Abacha from Nigeria, the total amount of Abacha loot recovered, and all agreements signed regarding the recovered funds by the mentioned former presidents.
The judgment was delivered by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho in response to a Freedom of Information suit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/407/2020.
Justice Omotosho ruled in favor of SERAP, stating that the application was meritorious. He ordered the Ministry of Finance, representing the Federal Government, to provide SERAP with the complete spending details of the approximately $5 billion Abacha loot within seven days of the judgment.
