Nigeria’s victory in the women’s 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August last year has been nullified due to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation. The Athletics Integrity Unit suspended Nigerian athlete Grace Nzubechi Nwokocha, who was part of the team that won gold and set an African Record. As a result, Team England, who finished second in the race, will be upgraded to gold medallists.
The relay squad from England, consisting of Asha Philip, Ashleigh Nelson, Bianca Williams, Daryll Neita, and Imani-Lara Lansiquot, crossed the finish line in 42.41 seconds, surpassing the previous fastest time set by England at the Commonwealth Games (42.46). Despite initially securing the silver medal, they will now be awarded the gold medal following Nigeria’s disqualification.
This upgrade means that Team England retains their women’s 4x100m relay title, having also won the event four years ago in Gold Coast, where Asha Philip and Bianca Williams were part of the winning squad.
With Nigeria’s disqualification, Jamaica, who originally took the bronze medal, will now be upgraded to the silver medal position. Australia, who finished fourth, will receive the bronze medal. The reclassification of the medal standings reflects the consequences of Nigeria’s Anti-Doping Rule Violation in the women’s 4x100m relay event at the Commonwealth Games.
