The Anambra State Government has successfully rescued a 19-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped by six boys in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of the state. The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, announced the arrest of the suspects and assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated.
According to Commissioner Obinabo, the intervention was prompted by the viral video of the incident, which brought the heinous crime to the attention of authorities. The victim was promptly rescued, and in collaboration with the police, the suspects were apprehended. The case has been transferred to the state criminal investigative department for further investigation.
Expressing concern over the alarming rate of crimes committed by delinquents, Commissioner Obinabo called on parents and guardians to prioritize the proper upbringing of their children and wards. She emphasized the commitment of the state government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to ensure that justice is served to deter criminals.
The survivor, in her account of the harrowing ordeal, revealed that she had visited her maternal home in Oramaetiti, Anam when she was ambushed by a group of boys. They forcibly took her to a room where they took turns raping her, while one of them filmed the act. On her way home, she was accosted by another group of boys who harassed her and demanded her undergarments under threat of harm. A compassionate individual later took her to safety and informed her parents about the incident.
The mother of the survivor, who requested anonymity, expressed concern for her daughter’s safety and revealed that these suspects had allegedly victimized two other girls in the area.
