Former employees of Twitter Africa, based in Accra, Ghana, are still waiting for their severance pay seven months after being laid off as part of a global cost-cutting measure following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. Despite accepting Twitter’s offer in late May, the former employees have not received the three months’ worth of severance, repatriation costs, and legal expenses promised to them. They say Twitter has been unresponsive, leaving them in uncertainty and financial strain.
The former employees agreed to the settlement without benefits, though it was less than what their colleagues in other locations received. According to their attorney, Carla Olympio, the last communication from Twitter or its lawyers was in May after the settlement was agreed upon. However, Twitter has not followed through on its commitment.
CNN reached out to Twitter for comment but received an automated response with a poop emoji. It is uncertain whether Twitter still has a media relations department. The former employees and their attorney signed non-disclosure agreements as part of their exit terms, and they spoke on condition of anonymity.
Ghana’s Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations is investigating the claims, but it remains unclear if they have the authority to compel Twitter to comply with the settlement. The former employees and their attorney assert that the offer was never finalized.
