Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday night to address the recent removal of fuel subsidy and discuss the implementation of relief measures, or palliatives, to ease the impact on Nigerians.
Chaired by Imo State Governor and APC Governors’ Forum Chairman, Hope Uzodinma, the meeting focused on working with the federal government to finalize plans for the palliatives. These measures are expected to include cash transfers, tax breaks, and increased subsidies for public transportation.
Governor Uzodinma stated that the removal of fuel subsidy will lead to increased funds during the upcoming Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting. The governors are determined to utilize these additional funds in a manner that ensures citizens’ satisfaction and protects the country’s economy. He also assured that the current hardship caused by the fuel price increase is being addressed.
The governors also discussed the voluntary resignations of APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, and National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore. Uzodinma commended the wisdom behind their actions and stated that there is no crisis in the party. The APC remains united and supportive of the decisions made by the former chairman and secretary, acknowledging their contributions to the party.
The meeting was attended by key APC governors, including Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Umar Bago of Niger State, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.
The National Economic Council will convene on Thursday to finalize the plans for the palliatives, indicating the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the fuel subsidy removal and providing relief to Nigerians.
