The Department of State Security (DSS) has officially ended its siege on the residence of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. Following his arrest in Lagos and subsequent transfer to Abuja for interrogation, DSS operatives had sealed Emefiele’s residence located in Ikoyi, Lagos.
After weeks of investigation, the DSS operatives have now departed from the premises, indicating the conclusion of their investigation. With the DSS pulling out, there is hope that the court may finally grant Emefiele’s request for bail, as he has spent over six weeks in DSS custody.
Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigation and the subsequent actions that President Bola Tinubu may take regarding the matter. However, it is worth noting that Emefiele’s arrest was in defiance of a court order issued in December 2022 by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which barred the DSS, Attorney-General of the Federation, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the CBN from arresting him.
The arrest was made based on allegations of funding terrorism and economic sabotage, among other charges. As the situation unfolds, there is heightened public interest in the case, and the court’s decision on Emefiele’s bail request will be closely watched.
