Police operatives in Anambra State have apprehended a lone armed man lurking around the premises of a popular hotel in Awka. Speculations suggest that the suspect may have trailed a guest to the hotel with the intention of attacking the guest as they leave. It is suspected that the man is a cultist and was monitoring a member of a rival cult, planning to eliminate him.
According to DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, surveillance operatives observed the man behaving suspiciously around the hotel and decided to confront him. Upon conducting a search, the operatives found an English-made pistol and three rounds of live ammunition in his possession.
The arrested suspect identified himself as Akuchieani Echezona and is a resident of Ifite Awka. He was promptly disarmed, arrested, and taken into custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Awka to take over the case and investigate the source of the weapon as well as the gunman’s intentions for carrying a firearm to a hotel.
The suspect will be arraigned in court once the investigation concludes.
