A fresh confrontation with bandits in Zamfara State has resulted in the reported death of at least seven soldiers. The incident occurred when the bandits invaded Kangon Garacce, a community in the Dangulbi district of Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara.
According to Lawal Dangulbi, a resident of the community, the Nigerian Army troops responded to a distress call about the attack on the community but were ambushed by the bandits while attempting to rescue the villagers. The bandits reportedly divided themselves into attacking the community and preventing the military’s intervention, leading to the death of seven soldiers.
The attack on Kangon Garacce resulted in the loss of lives, with at least 20 residents of the community killed during the incident. However, the Nigerian Army authorities in Zamfara State have not yet provided an official statement on the matter.
Zamfara State is one of the states worst hit by banditry in the northern region of Nigeria, along with Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Sokoto. These bandits not only carry out attacks but also engage in mass abductions for ransom, holding captives in hidden camps located in vast forests across the region.
Despite efforts by security agencies and state governments, the gunmen continue to carry out deadly attacks, resulting in the loss of many lives and causing significant security challenges in the affected areas. The situation remains a cause for concern, and urgent measures are needed to address the ongoing violence and insecurity in Zamfara and other states impacted by banditry in Nigeria.
