Some chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State have expressed their disapproval of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s alleged attempt to nominate the state’s ministerial slot in President Bola Tinubu’s incoming cabinet.
The stakeholders, represented by the Bayelsa APC Elders Council, gathered in Yenagoa, the state’s capital, to voice their concerns. They contended that Jonathan should not “reap where he doesn’t sow,” referring to his purported attempt to nominate a ministerial position for Tinubu’s cabinet, despite supporting his party’s candidate, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Chief Michael Adomokeme, Chairman of the council, expressed his belief that President Tinubu, known for rewarding hard work, would not allow a situation where individuals benefit without contributing to the party’s progress. Adomokeme highlighted the party’s long-standing struggle and challenges faced in Bayelsa State, which Jonathan and his allies allegedly contributed to by labeling APC as an “Islamic party” or “Hausa party.”
He questioned Jonathan’s sudden interest in nominating the ministerial slot for Bayelsa, considering that he had personally nominated dozens of ministers during his six-year tenure as President. Adomokeme further described the former president’s alleged lobbying as an aberration and demeaning to the office of the President of Nigeria.
The chieftains emphasized that Jonathan should continue being a statesman and hero of democracy rather than engaging in political lobbying for personal interests. They expressed their desire for the APC’s visible path to victory in the upcoming November elections and urged against any attempts to disrupt the party’s progress.
