Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has nominated Lloyd Ekweremadu, the son of former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu, as a commissioner. Alongside Lloyd, a lawyer, Governor Mbah has put forward 14 other candidates as commissioner nominees.
Notably, Lloyd Ekweremadu and his parents, Ike Ekweremadu and Beatrice, were convicted of organ trafficking by a UK court in March. The court found them guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain for exploitation. Lloyd’s father, Ike Ekweremadu, was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, while his mother received a four-year and six-month jail term.
Among the nominees are former commissioners for lands and rural development in the state, Okey Ogbodo and Kingsley Udeh, respectively. Akachukwu Eze, a prominent broadcast journalist from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, is also on the list.
The nomination list, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chididebere Onyia, was presented to the State Assembly by the Speaker, Uche Ugwu. Three professors are also among the nominees, although their specific portfolios were not indicated in the letter.
The governor’s letter to the Assembly indicates that this may not be the final list of nominees, and more candidates are expected to be submitted for consideration.
