Reigning champions Nigeria continued their impressive run at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Kigali, securing a second consecutive victory by defeating Egypt 83-65. Despite a slow start, Nigeria took control of the game and never looked back, earning a spot at the Quarter-Finals as they top Group D.
The turning point in the match occurred during the first quarter when Nigeria established their dominance and took the lead. While Egypt attempted to resist and close the gap, the D’Tigresses maintained their composure and responded with a strong final period, scoring 27 points.
Statistical analysis revealed Nigeria’s strength in various aspects of the game. They capitalized on Egyptian loose balls, scoring 20 points from turnovers. The Nigerian bench proved crucial, contributing 68 points, while Egypt’s bench managed only 6 points. Nigeria’s dominance in rebounds, with 71 grabs compared to Egypt’s 34, showcased their control of the paint and second-chance opportunities.
Amy Okwonko emerged as the standout player for Nigeria, recording an impressive double-double with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Her flawless free-throw shooting, going 11/11, further fueled the team’s success. Murjanatu Musa and Nicole Enabosi also played pivotal roles, contributing 18 and 10 points, respectively.
With this victory, Nigeria extended their unbeaten streak on the continent to 21-0, cementing their reputation as reigning African champions. The team’s determination, as expressed by forward Amy Okwonko, exemplified their commitment to each other and the country’s success.
