Despite Leicester City’s relegation from the English Premier League (EPL) last season, Nigerian Super Eagles players Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi are poised to continue their journey with the club as they prepare for the upcoming Championship campaign. The team’s first match in the Championship is scheduled for Sunday.
Although Leicester City’s final 2-1 victory over West Ham in the 2022-23 EPL season was not enough to prevent relegation, both Iheanacho and Ndidi have been listed as part of the men’s team for the 2023-24 season, according to the club’s website.
As the new English Championship season commenced with Southampton’s 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday, the decision of Iheanacho and Ndidi to remain with Leicester City signals their commitment to the club’s efforts to reclaim their position in the top tiers of English football.
While Iheanacho and Ndidi have opted to stay at Leicester City, several other Nigerian players have made moves during the summer transfer window. Samuel Chukwuezde joined AC Milan, Calvin Bassey made a move to Fulham from Ajax, Ola Aina joined Nottingham Forest, and Victor Boniface signed with Bayer Leverkusen.
In addition, Victor Osimhen, a sought-after player, has garnered interest from prestigious clubs such as PSG and Chelsea. Osimhen even turned down a lucrative offer of £1 million per week from Al Hilal.
The summer transfer window still has nearly four weeks remaining, leaving room for potential player movements. However, despite the transfer window’s uncertainty, the decisions of Iheanacho and Ndidi to remain with Leicester City for the Championship campaign indicate their dedication to the club’s future success.
