The Federal Government of Nigeria is collaborating with the Nasarawa State government on a lithium processing policy that aims to encourage the local processing of lithium mined in the state. Dr. Bashir Gwandu, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), revealed this during a visit by the Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule.
The partnership is aligned with NASENI’s efforts to promote the processing of Strategic Solid Minerals, particularly lithium, and to facilitate the production of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage applications within Nigeria. Nasarawa State is recognized for having substantial lithium deposits.
Gwandu mentioned that NASENI has been calling on global investors and Nigerian lithium off-takers to collaborate on locally processing various forms of lithium into batteries. Chinese companies have reportedly shown interest in partnering with NASENI for lithium processing.
Governor Sule emphasized the importance of coordination between states that may attract similar investments in lithium processing. He referred to a “Lithium Rush” happening in Nasarawa State due to the significant increase in lithium prices on the world market. He suggested using NASENI’s Solar in Gora facility for lithium processing and battery production, given its proximity to raw materials and the NASENI Solid Minerals Institute.
The Governor also mentioned plans for a “Lithium Rush Summit” as part of the state’s economic initiatives. The partnership between the Federal Government, NASENI, and Nasarawa State aims to capitalize on Nigeria’s potential as a significant lithium producer and processor on the global stage.
