In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) community, a 500-level student, Ayomide Akeredolu, tragically died after slumping in his hostel on Thursday, August 24, 2023. A promising student enrolled in the Quantity Survey Department, Akeredolu was rushed to the school’s health centre following the incident, but he was sadly pronounced d£ad.
Amidst the grief and disbelief surrounding Akeredolu’s untimely passing, his fellow students have taken to the streets to express their outrage. On Friday, August 25, a group of his colleagues staged a poignant protest at the Akure-Ilesa expressway, demanding answers and justice for their departed friend. Allegations of negligence at the school’s medical center have fueled the flames of their anger.
A student who claimed to have been present when Akeredolu was rushed to the hospital described the harrowing scene. “We rushed the guy to the health center around 8:30 pm,” they recounted. “When we got there, there was power outage, and throughout the oxygen setup, CPR, and injections they gave him, the light wasn’t restored. We had to use our flashlights. It’s hard to believe that there’s no backup power supply in the hospital.”
As the investigation unfolds into the circumstances leading to Ayomide Akeredolu’s tragic death, the protests stand as a stark reminder of the need for accountable and dependable medical facilities within educational institutions. The FUTA community mourns the loss of a young life, while demanding a thorough examination of the events that transpired on that fateful evening.
