The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State has once again called on residents, especially those in Southern Kaduna, to take responsibility for defending their communities in the face of renewed attacks by bandits. CAN emphasized that security is the responsibility of everyone.
Reverend John Hayab, the CAN State Chairman, issued this call in response to an attack on Fadan Kamatan Parish of the Catholic diocese of Kafanchan in Zangon Kataf LGA of the state.
Hayab urged the state governor and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to ensure that those responsible for the attack are apprehended and brought to justice. He expressed his concern that such criminal activities could occur within the Fadan Kamantan community without effective challenge by security forces, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and community leaders.
CAN emphasized its belief that citizens should complement the government’s efforts to protect lives and properties by actively participating in building a community security system that prevents invasions into their communities.
Reverend Hayab appreciated the Kaduna State government’s ongoing efforts to address the security challenge, such as the recruitment of over 7,000 individuals into the Kaduna State Vigilante Services (KADVIS).
He called on leaders at all levels in Southern Kaduna and Kaduna State to respond to the call for community protection and take responsibility for the safety of their communities.
The attack near the Kaduna-Kafanchan major highway, which had a nearby military checkpoint, was described as disheartening by Hayab. CAN expressed its condolences to various affected parties, including the Kafanchan Diocese, the Parish Priest and Parishioners of Kamatan Parish, the Kurama Community, and the people of Zangon Kataf LGA and Fadan Kamantan community.
