Despite a total ban on commercial motorcycle operations in several local government areas of Lagos State, some motorcyclists are finding ways to return to the roads, often operating with a sense of fear and caution.
Lagos has faced longstanding issues with unregulated motorcycle transportation, leading to accidents, security problems, and traffic congestion. In May 2022, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced an indefinite and total ban on commercial motorcycles in six local government areas, extending the ban to additional areas in August 2022.
Despite the ban, some motorcyclists are gradually returning to the roads in defiance of government orders. They continue to operate, often evading the authorities, though they do so with apprehension. Some police officers and task force officials are also seen using commercial motorcycles, believing their colleagues in uniform will not arrest them.
Local residents report that motorcycle services are still available in some communities, but riders often refuse to stop when hailed due to fear of police and task force officials.
The state’s Task Force regularly impounds motorcycles and has stepped up enforcement. Despite the challenges of apprehending motorcycle riders, officials continue to confiscate bikes as part of their efforts to enforce the ban.
The police have also expressed concerns about the use of commercial motorcycles for transport purposes, as riders frequently prioritize their own escape over passenger safety, leading to accidents and injuries. However, the police are actively working to enforce the ban and discourage officers from using motorcycles for commercial purposes.
