Nigeria has lost the joint bid with Benin Republic to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The hosting rights have been awarded to Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, who will be the joint hosts for the tournament, as reported by AFP.
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, led representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation to Egypt on Tuesday to present Nigeria’s bid for hosting AFCON in 2027. The announcement of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as joint hosts indicates that Nigeria’s bid was unsuccessful.
Nigeria’s only previous hosting of the AFCON took place in 1980, with Christian Chukwu leading the team to victory at the National Stadium in Lagos. The joint hosting with Ghana in 2000 ended in disappointment for Nigeria, as Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions claimed the trophy.
Details regarding the decision and the bid process are expected to be provided later.
