Approximately 25 members of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) from Akure were reportedly abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Friday afternoon. The victims, who were traveling to Ifon for a burial ceremony, were stopped by the kidnappers, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
The victims, members of the Oke Igan branch of CAC in Akure, were traveling in the church vehicle. The incident occurred around 3 pm, and their abandoned vehicle was found on the side of the road.
A source, with two family members among the kidnapped church members, expressed concern, stating that there has been no news from the victims. The church members were reportedly on their way to a program in Ose council area of the state.
Confirming the incident, the State Police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, stated that the command was informed on Friday afternoon. She mentioned that the police, including the Anti-kidnapping squad and other tactical teams, are actively involved in a rescue operation.
The Owo-Ifon-Benin road, where the abduction occurred, is known for incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery. The road is currently in a deplorable condition, contributing to security challenges in the area. Further information on the incident will be communicated as the situation develops.
