The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a final warning to Arise Television concerning the use of derogatory and incendiary remarks on its station. The warning, conveyed in a letter dated October 6, 2023, from the Commission’s Director General, Dr Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, emphasizes the need for responsible broadcasting.
The letter, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Arise Global Media Limited, urges the TV station to implement a delay mechanism to prevent undesirable content. It also calls on Arise Television to uphold its responsibility in managing the behavior of guests featured on its programs.
Titled “Preponderance of derogatory and incendiary remarks: final warning,” the letter expresses the NBC’s concern about the frequency of incendiary remarks allowed on Arise news. It specifically mentions a morning show program on October 5, where guests made unguarded incendiary remarks against the Legislature, Executive, Judiciary, and the President.
Furthermore, the letter points out another program, “Newsday,” which featured a guest using derogatory remarks on air. The NBC draws attention to specific broadcast rules and codes violated during these instances and advises Arise TV to install a delay mechanism as prescribed in the broadcasting code.
This warning comes as part of the regulatory efforts to ensure responsible and ethical broadcasting in accordance with established rules and guidelines.
