Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has successfully regained his freedom from the authorities in Benin after a two-year legal battle. Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, Igboho stated that he is now legally free to return to Nigeria and travel to any country in the world. He emphasized that all the legal conditions attached to his bail have been fulfilled, paving the way for his return to Nigeria, his country of origin.
The embattled agitator, who has been residing in Cotonou, the capital of the Benin Republic, confirmed, “I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again. Even though I have been living in Cotonou for some time, I can confirm to you categorically that I have now secured the liberty to leave Cotonou for Nigeria.”
This development comes after a tumultuous period for Igboho, who stirred controversy in March 2021 by declaring the sovereignty of the Yoruba Nation. His campaign to expel killer herdsmen and kidnappers from South-West states and the call for Yoruba people in other territories intensified tensions.
In July 2021, Igboho fled Nigeria following a nocturnal invasion of his Ibadan residence by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The attack resulted in at least one death, with some of his belongings being vandalized. The DSS claimed to have recovered firearms and ammunition from his apartment, an assertion later set aside by the Court of Appeal in August 2022.
Igboho’s troubles continued as he was later arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou while attempting to flee to Germany. Despite attempts by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to repatriate him to Nigeria, those efforts proved unsuccessful. Igboho’s return to Nigeria now marks a significant development in his protracted legal saga.
