The Nigeria Police in Benue State has confirmed an incident where gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen hijacked a Benue Links bus on the Naka road in Gwer West LGA. The bus was en route to Otukpo when the assailants struck at Tyolaha village.
Reports indicate that during the attack, one passenger lost their life, and several others sustained injuries of varying degrees. This recent assault is not the first occurrence, as the area has witnessed previous attacks by marauding herdsmen on passengers along the dilapidated road.
Tyolaha village, in particular, has become a hotspot for such attacks, with residents expressing concern about the persistent menace of suspected Fulani herdsmen. The attackers, numbering approximately 15, reportedly overpowered their victims, hindering any resistance and facilitating their escape without difficulty.
Due to the incessant attacks, many residents have fled the area, and farmers along the route have relocated. The remaining individuals are now calling on the government and security forces for increased protection.
Confirming the incident, the Benue Police Public Relations Officer, Anekwe Catherine, stated, “A bus belonging to Benue Links, which was heading to Otukpo, was attacked by unknown gunmen, and three persons, including women, were wounded, and one person died this morning.” Authorities are likely to intensify efforts to address the security challenges in the region.
