The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted approval for a 30-day implementation plan for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and Organized Labour. The decision was reached during a council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The plan outlines the steps and timeline for executing the agreement, with a deadline of 30 days for tangible progress.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, highlighted that the MoU covered 15 items, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and harmonious industrial relations. He underscored that the agreement would be filed in court, and presidential approval was obtained through the Federal Executive Council.
In addition, Lalong addressed the issue of external interference in union activities, stating that the government would not tolerate such interventions. He noted that the council’s approval served as a warning against external bodies influencing unions, emphasizing the need for a conflict-free environment.
Regarding item six of the MoU, which dealt with alleged interference in the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lalong reported that meetings had been held with the factions involved. He assured that the government was actively engaging with the parties to resolve the issues, with a deadline set for October 13.
Lalong stated, “Our own is to dispense with conflicts, and we are going to continue to do that. Those ones are going to be sorted out.”
The approved implementation plan signals the government’s commitment to fulfilling the terms of the MoU with Organized Labour, ensuring timely and effective execution.
