Nigeria is set to import equipment valued at 1.2 million Euros for the purpose of conducting maintenance on the Eko Bridge in Lagos, according to Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works. This announcement was made through a statement issued by Mr. Clement Ezeorah, Assistant Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Works.
During a working visit to several key bridges in Lagos State, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, Falomo Bridge, Iddo Bridge, Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, and Iganmu Bridge, the minister conducted inspections alongside ministry directors and contractors.
Minister Umahi disclosed that the maintenance would involve opening the deck of the Eko Bridge, an essential step in preserving its structural integrity.
He commended the efforts of President Buhari’s administration in addressing bridge maintenance and improvement. He highlighted that the Eko Bridge faces two main issues: a lack of regular maintenance and the deterioration of its bearings. Although there have been significant past efforts, the minister stressed the need for ongoing work to ensure the bridge’s safety and longevity.
Minister Umahi also discussed the Third Mainland Bridge, emphasizing that it is divided into two sections and requires comprehensive maintenance, particularly from the Federal Government. He attributed the deflection observed on the bridge to a historical lack of maintenance by successive Federal Government administrations prior to President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.
However, he noted that the bridge received attention from the state government, particularly during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as the governor of Lagos State.
The maintenance and development of critical infrastructure like these bridges are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation in Lagos, a vital economic hub in Nigeria.
