Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed confidence that the political crisis in the state will be resolved. Governor Fubara made this statement during a visit by a military delegation led by Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
In reference to Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Governor Fubara remarked, “For our dear state, I know everybody is wondering what’s going on, what’s not going on. We are okay, there is no problem.” He further added, “There is nothing wrong if a father and a son have a problem. If there is any problem — but I don’t think there is anything. Whatever it is, we will definitely resolve the issue.”
The political tension in Rivers State escalated on Monday when some lawmakers in the state’s House of Assembly attempted to impeach Governor Fubara. This move led to the removal of Ehie Edison, an ally of Fubara, from his position as the leader of the state assembly. However, hours later, Edison was elected as the new speaker.
The crisis in the state is believed to be linked to a rumored rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. On Tuesday, the two politicians met at the presidential villa, marking their first sit-down meeting since the onset of the crisis.
Governor Wike, while addressing a delegation of south-south leaders in Abuja, addressed the political turmoil in the state, emphasizing that it is an internal party matter.
Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, announced that President Bola Tinubu had intervened in the crisis and expressed optimism that peace would be restored in the state. The PDP also called on all involved parties in the state to “sheathe their swords and allow for a peaceful and amicable resolution of all the issues.”
