The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that he has received a presidential directive to construct a new Court of Appeal in Abuja. Wike made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the 2023 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts of Record at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.
According to Wike, the directive is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which emphasizes creating an environment conducive to the judiciary’s effective functioning and the delivery of justice without bias.
As part of the directive, Wike stated that a new Court of Appeal division for the FCT will be established, with completion expected within the next 15 months. Additionally, the president has directed the construction of residences for judges of the High Court and their counterparts in Magistrates courts in the capital city.
“In the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), we are committed to fostering an environment that supports the judiciary in dispensing justice without fear or favour. We recognize the importance of a well-equipped and adequate staff force, as well as the need for continuous education to ensure that our judges are abreast of the latest developments in jurisprudence,” Wike emphasized.
He further commended the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for facilitating a platform for judges nationwide to exchange ideas, engage in substantive discussions, and stay informed about evolving legal issues.
Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the NJI, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, highlighted the strategic importance of the conference, serving as both a stock-taking and visioning platform for the judiciary. The initiatives outlined by Wike aim to enhance the infrastructure of court facilities and improve the overall welfare of judicial officers in Abuja.
