In an unforeseen incident, a ValueJet CRJ 900 Bombardier aircraft experienced a runway excursion at Port-Harcourt International Airport, leading to momentary panic and chaos among the 62 passengers and five flight crew members on board.
The incident occurred as the aircraft, with registration 5N-BXR, landed at 15.32 hours but overshot the runway. Despite the alarming nature of the situation, the aircraft managed to land safely, providing a sense of relief to passengers who were perplexed by the unexpected occurrence. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage to the aircraft.
Managing Director of ValueJet, Capt. Dapo Majekodunmi, shed light on the incident, explaining that Captain Stanley Balami reported the slip was a result of algae on the taxiway, which impeded the aircraft from maintaining the centerline during landing.
Assuring the public of ValueJet’s unwavering commitment to safety, Capt. Majekodunmi emphasized that the airline’s operations remain normal without any disruptions. The incident, while causing a brief moment of concern, underscores the importance of swift and effective responses to unforeseen challenges in the aviation industry.
