In a shocking incident in Adamawa State, a 20-year-old woman, Amina Hassan, hailing from Shuware community in Mubi North LGA, has set her husband’s house ablaze in a desperate bid to force him to divorce her. The incident, which unfolded just five weeks after their wedding, revealed a disturbing pre-wedding arrangement that had taken place.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, Amina confessed to the police that there was an agreement between her and her husband, Muhammed Auwal, stipulating that he would divorce her shortly after their marriage ceremony. However, when Amina approached her husband with the request for a divorce, he refused, leading to a violent altercation.
“We made an arrangement that he would divorce me after the marriage. I met him and pleaded with him to divorce me, but he remained adamant. He descended on me and started beating me instead of divorcing me, as a result of which I lost my temper and set the house ablaze,” Amina explained to police operatives.
The situation took a complicated turn as it was revealed that a few days before the wedding, Amina had expressed her desire to call off the marriage to her parents. Despite her plea, her parents insisted that there was no turning back, as they had already distributed invitation cards.
When all her efforts to dissolve the marriage failed, Amina reportedly sought the assistance of a native doctor to change her husband’s heart. However, the husband showed increased interest, and in an attempt to escape Amina’s anger, the native doctor reportedly fled Mubi and became unreachable.
Police are currently investigating the incident, and Amina faces legal consequences for arson. The case sheds light on the complexities of marital arrangements and the lengths some individuals may go to resolve disputes in unconventional ways.
