Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has provided clarification on the N7.3 billion expenditure not captured in the 2023 fiscal year budget, stating that it represents funds received from the federal government labeled as the “Infrastructure Support Fund.” The governor emphasized that he did not personally spend the money during his medical vacation.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, Governor Akeredolu explained that the N7.3 billion constituted the cumulative amount of palliative funds from the federal government. These funds were allocated under the contingency sub-heading to address unforeseen expenses not initially budgeted for but deemed necessary during the fiscal year.
He highlighted that the original contingency fund in the 2023 budget was N1,069,000,000.00, and the additional N7 billion was specifically designated as “Infrastructure Support Fund.” This fund was intended for palliatives to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
Governor Akeredolu reiterated the commitment of his administration to transparency and accountability, citing the Ondo State Public Finance Management Law 2017, which establishes a Contingency Fund for emergency expenditures not provided for in the current year’s Appropriation Law.
The governor clarified that he did not personally spend the N7.3 billion, and the funds were appropriately utilized for palliatives. The Palliative committee is set to provide detailed information on the expenditure of the fund in due course, ensuring transparency in financial matters.
The statement aimed to dispel any claims of impropriety, urging the public to rely on accurate information and refrain from being swayed by sensational claims lacking factual basis.
