The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment in Nigeria, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, revealed that the Nigerian government prefers to purchase imported vehicles because local manufacturers still fall short in providing after-sale services. The minister made this statement during a stakeholders’ engagement forum organized by the National Automotive Design and Development Council in Lagos.
Uzoka-Anite clarified that the government’s preference for imported vehicles is based on its commitment to operational efficiency, reliability, and fiscal responsibility in managing its vehicle fleet. She emphasized the importance of after-sale service and urged local automakers to focus on improving this aspect to ensure sustained business success.
The minister highlighted the auto industry’s significance in achieving economic diversification and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting local manufacturers. She encouraged manufacturers to take responsibility for addressing customer complaints and operational risks. Uzoka-Anite advised industry players to develop partnerships for producing parts and establish accessible service centers for customers.
Addressing concerns from buyers of Nigerian vehicles, the minister acknowledged the common complaint about the lack of service centers for locally-made vehicles. She urged manufacturers to conduct market research to determine the appropriate number of service centers and emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to customer support in the automotive industry.
