Gunshots were reported at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) convention in Abuja, where a new set of national leaders is being elected. The violence allegedly erupted as thugs, purportedly supporting a candidate favored by Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, attacked opposition delegates.
The candidate in question, Lucky Emonefe, a 48-year-old individual who left the College of Education, Warri, Delta State, 20 years ago, has faced criticism and opposition from students and stakeholders. Some politicians were reported to have invested millions of Naira to influence the election in favor of Emonefe, who is considered by many as an unsuitable choice for the position.
Reports suggest that the violence involved gunshots and machete attacks, leading to injuries among students present at the convention. The thugs were allegedly led by Sunday Asefon, appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Students Engagements.
Concerns have been raised about the interference of politicians in the student association’s election process, with allegations of financial inducements and political backing for Emonefe’s candidacy. Students expressed disappointment at the involvement of older individuals in the leadership contest meant for students.
As the situation unfolds, tensions rise at the NANS convention, and the violence brings attention to the alleged influence of political figures on student leadership positions.
