The Super Falcons clinched a spot in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 2-1 victory against Cape Verde at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia on Tuesday. This win followed their emphatic 5-0 victory in the reverse encounter at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja last Thursday.
In the Tuesday match, Cape Verde signaled their intentions early with an 8th-minute goal from Racing Power striker Ivania Moreira, putting the hosts in the lead. The Super Falcons, determined to secure their spot in the WAFCON, pressed for an equalizer throughout the first half, but Cape Verde maintained their advantage.
The second half saw a resilient Nigerian side pushing for goals. Esther Okoronkwo, who came on as a substitute for Uchenna Kanu, made a significant impact by scoring in the 62nd minute. Okoronkwo’s solo finish added to the aggregate tally, ensuring the Super Falcons’ dominance.
Despite several attempts by the Nigerian team, including close calls from Toni Payne and Rasheedat Ajibade, the breakthrough came in the 93rd minute when acting captain Ajibade sealed the win, securing Nigeria’s place in the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The victory showcased the Super Falcons’ determination and resilience, overcoming the absence of key players such as Asisat Oshoala and Ashleigh Plumptre. The team’s collective effort and strategic substitutions by coach Justin Madugu contributed to their success in the crucial qualifier.
