Angry officers of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have voiced their frustration over the recent airstrikes on Tundun Biri in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army. The airstrikes, intended to target terrorists, resulted in over 120 reported deaths and more than 60 injuries among villagers celebrating Maulud.
NAF officers expressed their discontent, emphasizing that air troops possess more adequate training and equipment for air operations “with precision” compared to other military services. One NAF officer stated that each service has its dedicated roles, and air troops are more versed in air operations, including flying drones and attack helicopters.
However, some army officers downplayed the significance, stating that flying drones against enemies is within their capabilities. Despite acknowledging a mistake in this particular incident, they asserted that the army has the expertise and resources to conduct drone operations effectively.
A source familiar with both army and air force officials revealed that the tragic incident in Tudun Biri might have been avoided. Before the bombing, the army reportedly informed air force officials, who cautioned against targeting the gathering, as it did not appear to involve terrorists. The absence of motorcycles, commonly associated with terrorists or bandits, was cited as a red flag, leading to a tragic misunderstanding.
The incident has raised concerns about coordination and communication among different branches of the military, prompting discussions on avoiding such errors in the future.
