President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of the Nigerian Army remaining non-partisan yet vigilant in upholding democratic principles while discharging its duty to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Speaking at the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2023 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Tinubu pledged unwavering support to the military, asserting his commitment to provide the necessary resources to tackle challenges facing the nation.
Tinubu’s call for a non-partisan military comes on the heels of his recent condemnation of unconstitutional changes of government in West African countries at the Economic Community of West African States session. Reiterating his stance on keeping Nigeria secure, Tinubu expressed determination to win the battle against those threatening the nation.
Acknowledging the professional conduct of the Armed Forces during elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states, the President urged the Army to maintain non-partisanship and vigilance during elections, emphasizing its role as a guardian of constitutional order.
Highlighting the administration’s commitment to military modernization, Tinubu cited the recent procurement of new aircraft and emphasized the focus on enhancing mobility, communications, and offensive striking capabilities. He commended the civilian-military projects across the country, noting their positive impact on the relationship between the military and civilians.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the service and sacrifice of the armed forces, recalling his approval of N18 billion in Group Life Assurance benefits for families of fallen heroes. The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, credited Tinubu’s leadership for boosting the morale of the armed forces and assured continuous progress in the fight against insecurity.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, informed the President that ongoing military operations had significantly weakened criminal elements and addressed farmer-herders crises. He highlighted the importance of the conference in formulating long-term strategies to enhance the Army’s constitutional responsibilities in 2024.
