Elder statesman and convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, has expressed strong disapproval of the resolutions reached between Rivers Governor Sininalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
The political feud between Fubara and Wike over the control of Rivers State had escalated, prompting President Tinubu’s intervention. However, the resolutions that emerged from the meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday were met with criticism.
At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Clark described the eight-point resolutions as “baffling, appalling, and unacceptable” to the people of Rivers. He characterized the resolutions as “undemocratic and dictatorial,” accusing them of being designed to hand over the political leadership of Rivers to Wike.
Clark particularly highlighted his objection to the resolution directing the re-presentation of the Rivers 2024 budget to the house of assembly, terming it “another unthinkable directive.”
Expressing his displeasure, Clark stated, “The eight resolutions reached are the most unconstitutional, absurd, and obnoxious resolutions at settling feuding parties that I have ever witnessed in my life.” He criticized the meeting’s outcome as sacrilegious, asserting that the directives were arbitrary and lacked adherence to constitutional principles.
Accusing Governor Fubara of being ambushed and intimidated into submission, Clark vowed to resist what he deemed draconic and unconstitutional actions by President Tinubu and Nyesom Wike. He emphasized the intent to challenge the resolutions through legal means, asserting the necessity of upholding the rule of law in the face of perceived one-sided and oppressive actions.
